CHENNAI: She is bubbly but sports a contagious smile. Unlike a normal chess player, mostly the serious, brooding type, Padmini Rout has the easy-going approach. The Orissa girl will carry the hopes for India in the girl's category when she plays her first round game on Tuesday.
Expectations are high because her predecessor Koneru Humpy had already completed (men's ) Grandmaster title at 17 when she won the world junior girls title. Rout can seek inspirations from Dronavalli Harika and Soumya Swaminathan, both of whom had won the titles in the last three years. Still inspiration could quickly turn into pressure as she would be playing at home. Still her bronze win last year in Poland may boost her confidence. "I tied for the 13-28 th places at Yerevan in 2007, 28 th position in Gaziantep, Turkey in 2008 and eighth position at Puerto Madryn, Argentina in 2009," said the No.5 seed.
