Mary joins Tania at the topTNN | Nov 6, 2011, 11.06PM IST
CHENNAI: Padmini Rout's stint at the top came to a grinding
halt on Sunday as Mary Ann
Gomes of AAI played an attacking game in the eighth round and inflicted the
first defeat on the Orissa girl in the 38th National Premier women's chess
championship at the Nehru
Stadium.
With this win, Mary Ann moved into joint lead with Tania Sachdev of Delhi with six points each. Rout, Nisha Mohota (PSPB), Eesha Karavade (Maharashtra) and Chandika Divyasree (AP) shared the second position with 5.5 points each. Nisha Mohota and Tania Sachdev faced off in a quiet Queens Gambit accepted opening.
Tania was probably not at her usual best as she claimed a draw claim by repeating photographic positions after 33 moves. Mary Ann Gomes and Padmini Rout went on attacking spree in the Sicilian Najdorf game. Padmini overlooked a bishop pin on her knight and rook before the time control and lost material.
Mary Ann slowly got into a position from where she could deliver mate or get material. Rout resigned after 60 moves. Eesha Karavade of Maharashtra defeated Woman Grandmaster Meenakshi Subbaraman of Air India. In the upset of the day, Chandika Divyasree inflicted a defeat on defending Champion Woman Grandmaster Sowmya Swaminathan.

So far, Tania Sachdev has successfully held off the challengers, but there are three more round to go. Anything can happen.
"Padmini Rout" is almost as awesome a name for a chess player as "Stuart Conquest"!
