CAI Women National Chess Championship

The Chess Association of India is a competitor of the All India Chess Federation and they hate each other!  It is no accident that the CAI is hosting a national women's chess championship at the same time as the AICF.  The AICF has all the big names this year.  It's not necessarily because it offers larger prize money, but as the FIDE recognized federation for India, AICF has the power to deny the top chessplayers in the country the right to represent India in top FIDE competitions, and it has threatened to use this power on more than one occasion and, I believe, there have been instances where it actually has used this power.  This sucks.

India has more than one billion people.  There's more than enough room - and people - to support two active chess federations.  Particularly when one organization doesn't work with either its up-and-coming chess stars or go out of its way to help its established stars - except for a few favored "pets."  This really really sucks.
The CAI Women National Chess Championship is taking place in conjunction with several other youth-oriented events for male and female players, October 30 - November 3, 2011 in Pune.
