CHENNAI: Koneru Humpy suffered a major setback on Tuesday in her attempt to catch up with the leaders in the FIDEWomen's Grand Prix chess tournament at Jermuk.
Humpy lost her seventh-round game to Nadezhda Kosintseva of Russia and stayed in the third position with four points.
The Indian had a chance to catch up with sole leader Ju Wenjun of China, who could not make much progress and drew her game against Kateryna Lahno of Ukraine to move up to five points.
The other games that had a bearing on the lead positions, Hou Yifan vs Zhao Xue and Lufei Ruan vs Elina Danielian, also ended in draws. Yifan and Ruan shared the second position with 4.5 points each.
In Ruy Lopez, Nadezhda positionally out played Humpy and won a pawn in a queen and minor pieces ending on move 30 and later won two more pawns in a queen ending. By move 39, Humpy had nothing left on the board other than her queen.
Nino Khurtsidze of Georgia provided the upset of the day when she beat Ekaterina Kovalevskaya of Russia with black pieces. Khurtsidze won an exchange in English opening and squeezed the Russian in 46 moves.
