Girls chess tournament draws 40 competitors

Forty girls participated in the fourth annual all-girls chess tournament for kindergarten through eighth graders on Feb. 9.
Competitors were grouped according to age and skill level.
Winners were:
Joy Sun, Oceana Sipila and Kailli Golden, all from Instilling Goodness Elementary in Talmage in Mendocino County; Haley Joerger and Caitlyn Carnahan from Strawberry Elementary in Santa Rosa, Katie Thurman and Jade Schottstaedt from St. Vincent de Paul Elementary in Petaluma, Maya Kull from Mary Collins Elementary in Petaluma, Katelyn Kenneally from Hahn Elementary in Rohnert Park, Ava Kane from Penngrove Elementary, Josephine Hoagland from Hidden Valley Elementary in Santa Rosa, Sascha Chavez from Austin Creek Elementary in Santa Rosa and Maile Neargarder from Apple Blossom Elementary in Sebastopol.
The tournament raised $860 for “Girls on the Run,” an afterschool program focusing on healthy living and self esteem for girls.
The club will host its fifth annual Scholastic Chess Tournament for boys and girls on May 11 at Strawberry Elementary School, 2311 Horseshoe Dr., in Santa Rosa. For registration information, go to www.chessclubforkids.com
