This year, unfortunately, because of the strain on my finances due to this house downsizing thing -- which had been meant to DOWNSIZE my expenses as well as the time/energy spent in keeping up the yard, etc., thus freeing up more funds and time for my chessly activities -- HA! -- I was not able to fund prizes for female chessplayers for this year's MSC. I hope the ladies will turn out for it, nonetheless.  Goddesschess prizes will return for the next MSC.

Hales Corners Chess Challenge XIX!!!!!

Goddesschess is funding prizes for the chess femmes who participate in the Hales Corners Chess Challenge XIX on April 12, 2014, woo woo!  The same as we've done for several previous challenges: in the Open, $40 for a win, $20 for a draw; in the Reserve, $20 for a win, $10 for a draw.  Entry fees to Challenge XX will also be paid for the top finishing female player in the Open and Reserve Sections, if she chooses to register.

Goddesschess is also once again providing special gift bags to the top female finisher in each of the Open and Reserve Sections.  I have so much fun shopping for chessly items.  Be it noted that my definition of "chessly items" has somewhat expanded over the past several Challenges, as such unique items are rather difficult to find...

Challenge XIX is being held at the gorgeous Olympia Resort, a totally new venue:

Life Master Sheldon Gelbart will also be providing post-game analysis to anyone who inquires.  I've quite got over my fear of him, LOL!  His insight is incredible, and his enthusiasm for our wonderful game - I would put him up against anyone!  I have kibbutzed during many analyses he has provided to players at all levels during various Challenges, and have always walked away feeling so enlightened based on what he said.  If only I could remember it all...alas.

Southwest Chess Club's End of Year Get-Together

This Thursday, December 19.

The Southwest Chess Club is holding its annual Holiday End of Year Party.  This will be an evening of casual chess and socializing.  Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. This is a free event open to all chess players and their guests.

 

The Southwest Chess Club is located at the Hales Corners Village Hall/Police Station, 5635 South New Berlin Road, Hales Corners, Wisconsin, in the downstairs Community Room.  Club open at 6 PM.

GM Josh Friedel Lecture at Southwest Chess Club!

Hola everyone!

While the weather today is horrid (cold and raining), the news is great! 

GM Josh Friedel who now resides in Wisconsin (didn't know that) will be giving a lecture at my adopted Chess Club, Southwest Chess Club, on May 30, 2013.  Here are the particulars:

We are pleased to announce that Grandmaster Josh Friedel is once again coming to our club. He will give a 3-hour lecture at 7 pm, May 30, at our normal club meeting location in Hales Corners.

GM Friedel is currently the #1 player in Wisconsin, #40 in the US, and has participated in the US Championships (6th place in 2009).  Professional website.

Josh will be presenting a lecture entitled: Practical Tournament Situations (with a question and answer session following the lecture). 

There will be a $5 charge for adults (club members or non-members, pay at door), and Free admission for Juniors (18 and under).

Southwest Chess Club Presents: End of the World Tournament!

Whoever thought up the name of this tournament, you've really outdone yourself (or yourselves) -- sheer, unadulterated genius!

This Thursday, November 29, Southwest Chess Club is starting a new tournament. The Mayan End-of-Mankind Swiss is a three round tournament with one round this Thursday and subsequent rounds on the following two Thursdays, December 6 & 13. There will be two sections, Open and Under 1600. The event will take place at our usual meeting place, in the downstairs community room at the Hales Corners Village Hall. Registration is from 6:20 PM to 6:50 PM. Please arrive early to register, so that the first round can start at 7. Details below.

And don't forget, darlings, the Hales Corners Challenge XVI is coming up on October 20, 2012!  Goddesschess is once again sponsoring our popular prize structure for the ladies only:  In the Open, a win is worth $40, a draw is worth $20.  In the Reserve, a win is worth $20, a draw is worth $10.  We've been sponsoring prizes since Challenge VIII and slowly, ever so slowly, a few more female players, and then a few more, and a few more, have come out to support us during the last three-four Challenges, and our percentgage of female participation has nicely surpassed the general average of around 7% female to male participants in most tournaments in the U.S. 

We're hoping for a record-breaking turn-out for Challenge XVI, both in terms of all players and for female players.

Southwest Chess Club Action!!!

Every Thursday night (just about), there's action to be found at Southwest Chess Club.  This Thursday.  I don't know who comes up with the great names for their club tourneys or how long it takes, but they are always just spot on.  Sweltering Muggy - that's what it's been like around here and is forecast for next weekend as well! 

This Thursday, June 14, 2012 (and the next two Thursdays after that) the Southwest Chess Club presents for you the “Sweltering Muggy Summer Swiss” (see below for details). This is is a two section (Open and Under 1600), three round event. Time Control is Game in 100 minutes, with a 5 second delay. All three rounds will be played at the Hales Corners Village Hall, 5635 South New Berlin Road, Hales Corners, Wisconsin, in the downstairs Community Room. Club opens at 6 PM, Tournament Games at 7 PM.

Hales Corners Chess Challenge XV!!!!

I came, I saw, I fought through my first three games and beat off an Excedrin Headache Number 4,320, which is specifically reserved for female chess players (432 is the number of the Goddess, just ask historian, writer and myth-teller Joseph Campbell).  I lost all three games.  But I, even I, who am nothing if not brutally honest with myself, knew that I was playing "better" than during my pitiful appearance at Hales Corners Chess Challenge XIV last October.  I was lasting more moves into the games, I was taking more time to make moves and not paying much attention to the clock, and I was trying to "see" the board -- not with so much success, unfortunately.

Ellen Wanek, everyone's favorite mom and chess coach, was there to prop me up and we cheered each other on.  I even managed to write down most of the moves more or less correctly this time.  I didn't have the guts to have Sheldon play through one of those games with me afterward in the Skittles Room, though.  LOL!  And so, even though I had not been even anywhere near a draw (leastwise, as far as I could tell), I felt not so bad about how I was playing.  Yeah, I was making idiot dumb mistakes and - par for the course - recognizing moves I should have made one move too late!  EEK!  Always, always, always my opponent would see the threat AFTER I did, and recover.  Damn damn damn!

I had McDonalds for lunch!  It's been so long since I've had a Big Mac and fries, I can't tell you, darlings, how good they tasted!  Yeah, 10,000 calories, I'm sure I gained five pounds just by sniffing the air while I was waiting in line to place my order. 

And - Ellen had cacao 70% chocolate bars in her stash of goodies.  We actually hid out in stairwells to eat it, it was that good and that forbidden...

Hmmmm, come to think of it, we shared a final cacao bar before our last game.  I wonder...

Here is the only photo that turned out that was taken with my camera -- two other shots (one I took shortly after I arrived and my hands were shaking so badly I don't even know why I bothered!) turned out blurred.  This one, taken by an obliging gentleman, turned out nicely - except I look absolutely GHASTLY, OHMYGODDESS - I look like I weigh 300 pounds and my eyes are so swollen and my face is so puff (and red) you can hardly even see that I actually have eyes!  What the Hell!  I'm amazed my looks didn't scare my opponents into giving me some wins, geez!  And those glasses up on my forehead - sort of look like pointy little devil ears, don't they...

I had asked my friends and even my enemies to pray to the Goddess of Chess for me to give me at least one draw for Challenge XV.  That's all I asked for - just one little draw.  Guess what darlings - I GOT A WIN!

WOOOOOO WOOOOOO!  Unfortunately, I got a win against a gentleman who looks like Kris Kringle.  Take a look at that photo above - do you see the head of a white-haired, white-bearded gent in the background between Manisha and Teja?  He was my final opponent for the day, in Round 4.

Round 4, when I was so tired and bleary-eyed I couldn't really even see straight and my brain felt so fried.  But I was determined, absolutely determined, to keep on fighting until the bitter end.  Just like the tag line in "We Are The Champions" by my most favorite band ever, Queen.

I knew things were going my way when I snaggged Mr. Kringle's Queen and he didn't have an adequate response.

Now really, who wants to beat up on a gentleman who resembles Santa Claus?  I did think about that, I truly did.  And then , well - I sort of beat him up anyway.  I'm happy that I won a game - FINALLY - but I'm sad, too.  Because winning means that someone else loses.  And that is never a good feeling.  At least, you know, unless your opponent is an absolute Schmuck whose heart you want to cut out and burn while still beating, it shouldn't be.

I'm not clear on the moves between 15 and the end of the game. I have moves written down, but I seem to have switched to moving the white pieces, at least, in my notation I did. Strange, very strange.  I must have forgot to write down another move.  Darlings, I WAS moving the black pieces on the board.  Honest!  I'm sure my opponent would have objected at some point if I'd started moving his pieces around in addition to my own...

What I can tell you is that the final three moves were Qx Nb1, Rx Bg5, px Rg5, white resigned, I have an "R" under Black at move 23 but I didn't resign, so it must have been Mr. Kringle resigning on White's move 24.  Oy, some Chess Goddess I am, duh!  But I still had my Queen, because I had taken Mr. Kringle's on move 12. 

Maybe some day I'll sit down at a board and see if I can get it straightened out.

I am proud to say that my adopted chess club is one of the most active in the area and the principals work hard to make sure that the members (including honorary members like yours truly) are informed of events!  During the past year, especially, the Southwest Chess Club blog has also improved in providing more timely information on SW Chess Club events and other local and state-wide events.  Kudos to Southwest Chess Club!  The following copied rom the email I received earlier today:

It's that time again!  Polish Fest (one of the oldest of Milwaukee's ethnic festivals) is once again coming to the beautiful Maier Festival Grounds on Milwaukee's fabulous lakefront, and Southwest Chess Club will once again have a presence there.  This year introduces a new feature - SIMULS!  YAAAAHHHHHH!  A great idea, I hope tons of people sign up!  This is your chance area residents and visitors from out of town to match your chess skills and wits against a national master:

Hales Corners Chess Challenge XIII - Final Update!

The final results/standings have been posted at the USCF website.  Final tally of players:  105!  This is just two players short of the highest-ever registration in Challenge IX in April, 2009.  Several photographs from Challenge XIII have been posted at the Southwest Chess Club's blog. Goddesschess' heartfelt thanks to Southwest Chess Club for once again putting on a fine event and congratulations to all of the winners.

Hales Corners Chess Challenge XIII!

It's coming!  April 16, 2011 will be here in 30 days (hurray!) hopefully along with some balmy spring weather :)

The Challenge is grueling -- at least, I found it so - 4 games in one day!  Challenge XII was my introduction (crash-course) into the world of tournament chess, something I'd not done before and may never do again :)

Seriously, I had a great time and it was extremely educational to see what it's actually like to participate in a tournament and see how everything works.

We want to see Challenge XIII the biggest and best yet!  The Challenge is part of the Wisconsin Tour and also worth 10 USCF Grand Prix points. Flyer and information. 

Guaranteed prizes (higher amounts possible based on actual attendance):

In addition, Goddesschess is sponsoring prizes of $40 for each and every win and $20 for each and every draw by all chess femmes playing in the Open.  As in prior years, we will also pay the entry fee for the top female finishers in the Open and Reserve sections should they choose to play in the next Challenge. 

Southwest Chess Club Action!

This Thursday (10 March 2011) the Southwest Chess Club presents “Wind Blowing, Storms-a-roaring, Marching into Spring Swiss” (see below for details).  We plan to start promptly at 7:00 p.m.  Registration is 6:20-6:50 p.m.  I plan to close registration at 6:50.  If you arrive after first-round pairings are prepared, you will have to take a 1/2-point bye in the first round. 

However, if you want to play but anticipate being a few minutes late, please e-mail me or Tom Fogec or call me 414-861-2745 or Tom 414-425-6742 prior to 4:00 p.m. on March 10, so I can include you in the pairings.  If you need a first round bye please let me know as soon as possible and you can have one.  Thanks.  Hope to see everybody on Thursday.   Robin

4-Round Swiss in Two Sections (Open and U1600).  Game/100 minutes.  USCF Rated.  EF:  $5.00.  (One ½ Point Bye Available for any round (except round four) if requested at least 2-days prior to round).  TD is Grochowski; ATD is Fogec. 

EXTRA: "David's Best Game Prize"  There will be a $5.00 "Best Game" prize for this tournament, which will be awarded by David Dathe.  The prize will be awarded for the most interesting game played in the tournament.  Mr. Dathe is the judge of any games submitted.  All tournament players are encouraged to submit a game.  Please submit the game to the TD.  The game needs to be legible (readable) so it can be properly analyzed.

Mr. Dathe plans to continue this for all our longer time control tournaments this year (not rapid or blitz games). All tournament players are encouraged to submit a game. Please submit the game to the TD. The game needs to be legible (readable) so the endgame can be properly analyzed. An interesting endgame is the key, not a perfectly played opening or middle game.

UPCOMING CLUB MOVE (Feb. 17!)

The Southwest Chess Club will soon be meeting at a new location.  Starting on Thursday, February 17, we will be at the Hales Corners Village Hall/Police Station, located at 5635 South New Berlin Road, Hales Corners, Wisconsin, in the downstairs Community Room.  As many of you know, we met for many years in this location prior to major renovations and are pleased to be returning.  More details, including maps, will follow as we get closer to February 17.
