Lots of Serpent-Like Carved Stones

The first stone is at Lund. It is suggestive of a serpent in its form, but doesn't seem to have a head or tail :) The second stone, which depicts a serpent (or "dragon"), is from an unknown location. The serpent stone I wrote about a few posts ago is a rune stone. Here is what All Experts says about them: Rune stones are stones with runic inscriptions dating from the early Middle Ages but are found to have been used most prominently during the Viking Age. Compared to western Europe, Scandinavia has poor written evidence for its early medieval history. It wasn't until the twelfth century that their earliest law codes and histories were compiled. The only existing texts dating to earlier periods (besides a few finds of inscriptions on coins) were found amongst the Runic inscriptions, some of which were scratched onto pieces of wood or metal spearheads, but for the most part they have been found on actual stones.Sawyer, Birgit. The Viking-Age Rune-Stones. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000. Page 1There are approximately 6,000 known rune stones in Scandinavia. Out of those discovered runes, 3,000 of them date from the tenth and eleventh centuries and have been found in Sweden. Some of them are found on the exposed rock surfaces of the fjords or simply erected in the center of parks or schoolyards. Most of these inscriptions carved into the rune stones announce the deaths of local people who lived and died in their home country. Approximately ten percent of the known rune stones announce the travels and tragic deaths of men abroad. These runic inscriptions coincide with certain Latin sources, such as the Annals of St. Bertin and the writings of Liudprand of Cremona which contain valuable information on Scandinavians/Rus who visited Byzantium.Sawyer, Peter. The Oxford Illustrated History of the Vikings. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1997. pg. 139

...the stones may be calendars
representing the year's round.
the serpent has solar attributes,
is in the sun's quadrant of the tonalamatl, and it's position of
number 5(500sec=time travel for a sunray to reach earth)makes it a
sunbeam=xiuhcoatl(N)=flecha/arrow
de diós,and diós=tonatiuh(N)=
anthony sungod=tionantati(alkonquin)=father sun. coatl/serpent is a feature of the aztec calendar stone. so, what
we have here are stoneage pocket
watches=cebollas(sp)=onions, and,
probably can be made by analysis
to cry, tonalamatl, under scholastic arm-twisting. the xiuh
of xiuhcoatl is the lord of time,
herbs, and the old fire god,
xiuhtletl, whose early calculations
can be seen in the animal count of
the chauvet pont d'arc cave, cf.,
the geographic article on chauvet where the count is carried out, e.g., 420 figs/71felines(tonalamatl
numbers).

Hi Carlos,

Happy New Year! Thanks for the fascinating information about Xiuhcoatl. I do not think that anyone has connected these Viking rune stones with a calendar function, it probably has not occurred to anyone to do so. I don't know if there could be anything to it. A lot might depend upon what it is the runes are saying on each of the stones. As I understand the runes system, each one might have multiple meanings (like Egyptian hieroglyphics) - so that has to be taken into consideration. I do not know enough about runes to say whether they might have also esoteric meanings, although I have heard of "casting of runes". Why else would they be cast except to give an answer (like casting lots). So, an interesting proposition, Carlos.

...you're welcome. as it happens i
found ralph blum's small maroon,
the book of runes, at our weekly
thursday sale at the biblioteca, bought it for 10 pesos=80cents, st. martin's press, new york, 1982(isbn 0-312-08999-6), and, a slightly different first
edition is also available
from oracle press, 1982.
i am just beginning to gloss it.
looks hopeful, the rune for horse=
M=movement=mazatl(N)=deer, so they
are linked to deer culture(as everyone is), and that means
monotheistic sun worship. at first
glance, runes are what's left of
earlier tonalamatl calendrics(never
written)which filtered themselves
through the incomplete, warlike minds of western europe, confirming
my speculation souls/tonalamatl was
put together in the altai mts with
help from the zhuang-xi cavers, who
have the monkey/ozomatli cage which
gives the tonalamatl day 11.monkey
which in western europe stood for
bear, e.g., ozo-=oso(sp)=bear.
oh, and the rune, N=disruption=4=
naui(N)=cenauatitiuh(N)=sayonara,
no center. here we see our alphabet
being assigned the script/forms we use today, letter by letter. note
that the values of movement, storm,
and disruption are the same for
runes/letters M/N, which is why
you see in nauatl m/n used as
the label for nauatl and dispersion, e.g., move/navigate.

...the first 20 runes are based
on the tonalamatl sample, e.g.,
day/rune 17=movement=ollin(N/17)=
earthquake...day/rune 15=warrior=
cuauhtli(N/15)=eagle(aztec military
order)...day/rune 14=opening(cave)=
ocelotl(N/14)=animal of birthing
cave goddess(the first opening)...
day/rune 16=growth(4x4,4=growth,
no center)=buzzard(N/16)...
day/rune 18=flow=tecpatl(N/18)=
arrow/flint knapping, the -patl=
paddle(create flow)...day/rune 19=
disruption=quiahuitl(N/19)=storm...
day/rune 22=breakthrough=dagaz=
d/t/tlacaz(scandinavian)=tlacati/tlacatli(N)=
be born/day=tlac(atli)=tac/tag/dag
(ger)=day, which is listed on
p.105 as meaning, breakthrough/
transformation/day.
rune 17=ehwaz(scand)=eua tlaza
(N)=leave throw down(dash=tlaza).
rune 18=laguz(scand)=tlaca cozcatl?
=body/jewel(knapping reference?).
day/rune 19=hagalaz(scand)=
tlaca tlaza(N)=body t/l/raze
(storms knock things over).
blum's commentary on the runes
is off, but the value is the runes
are on the inside front and back covers.
