23rd World Senior Women's Chess Championship

Holy Hathor!  GM Nona Gaprindashvili played in a simul during this event on November 23 - say what!  Yep, she played!  I sure wish this event had received more publicity, for she is one of the great female chessplayers of our time. I don't know the details or her results, alas.  Link.

Oh oh - guess what, in the minute or so it took me to write this here, the link and my comment on Facebook have magically disappeared.  So, did she play this simul, or did she not?  Guess not?

This Championship took place November 11 - 24, 2013, in Opatija, Croatia.  World Women's Senior Chess Champion is WFM Yelena Ankudinova, who looks young enough to be my daughter. EEK!  Just how "old" does one have to be to qualify for the female world chess championship, heh?

WFM Yelena Ankudinova.
Senior?  Yeah, right! She just needs
to diet and exercise.

Here is the complete final cross-table for the women's event, and GM Nona Gaprindashvili finished in 2nd place overall:

2011 European Senior Chess Championships

The tournament is taking place right now in what looks to be an absolutely gorgeous place in northern Italy, having started on April 4 and runs through April 14, 2011. There are two championships going on concurrently: regular and rapid chess.  Rapid chess titles have been concluded.  The women's champion title in the larger tournament will be decided among top finishers in the main event - no separate women's event held.  The prizes are modest but the titles are coveted.  Senior men have to be at least 60 to qualify; senior women at least 50 years of age.

Madame Nona still has what it takes, with a very good result in the rapid championship, finishing in 8th place.  Kudos to top female finisher WIM Strutinskaya in that event.

Both chess femmes are neck and neck in the larger tournament, sitting in 6th and 7th places with 3.5/4.

For their final standings in the Rapid Chamionship, Strutinskaya earned 150 Euros and Nona earned 100 Euros.

Chess Femme News!

Chess is a big deal in Armenia.  The press regularly covers local and international events and the top Armenian players (who are very fine, I have to say), are stars in their homeland.  I thought this was particularly interesting, the mention of ex-pat Armenians who now play chess for other countries!

MANILA, Philippines – Chess player Marie Antoinette San Diego gave the Philippines its first gold medal in the ASEAN Primary School Sports Olympiad 2010 (APSSO) Chess Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.

San Diego bested Nguyen Thanh Thuy Tien of Vietnam in the tie-break points to clinch the gold of the individual girls standard competition.

San Diego and Thanh Thuy Tien tallied 4 points apiece in 5 outings. San Diego crushed Parahita Miliyana L of Indonesia 3 in the final round while Thanh Thuy Tien clobbered former solo leader Dita Karenza of Indonesia 2.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) President-Chairman Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. lauded San Diego's latest feat.

“This proves once again that the Filipino can be at par with the Asia’s best pawnpushers,” he said.
