Deysi Cori "qualified for the world chess."  Not sure if this means the overall knock-out championship that will determine the next challenger to the World Chess Championship, or if this qualifies her for the Women's Chess Championship knock-out (?) event.  Oh yeah, there were lots more players.  One chess femme finished in 27th place overall, hooray for her:

Awonder Liang Wins Gold Medal at World Youth Championships

Oh my gosh, this is such good news!  Thanks to Chris for posting an update some days ago at the article I posted about Awonder Liang.

This is really great news for Wisconsin chess fans and people who know the Liang family and the chessplaying siblings.  This is great news for U.S. scholastic chess too.  It's not too often an American chessplayer wins a gold medal at a world competition! 

The World Youth Chess Championships took place November 17 - 27, 2011 in Caldas Novas, GO, Brazil. 

Awonder played in the U-8 Open Section - here are the top 4 finishers, all completed the tournament with 7.5/9:

While it wasn't a necessarily a shock to fans of the young chessplayers who represented the USA in this year's World Championships, it may have come as something of a shock to the rest of the world not only that the Americans sent a large contingent of players, but that so many of them placed very well!

Another young American player, Li Rufeng, played in the U-10 Open won a Silver Medal - and honorable mention to Xie Tianming of the USA for finishing in the top 10 in this Group:

A big shout-out to our neighbors to the north, Yay Canada! Nice going with that Bronze Medal won by Michael Song.  Honorable mention to USA's Jeffrey Xiong, who finished in 5th place overall with 7.0/9. 

This isn't meant to be a comprehensive report of the World Youth Chess Championship.  I do express my opinion that I find the trend of our younger players showing excellent results as extremely promising for the future of American chess, provided we can get and maintain the necessary funding for training our young promising players, whether male or female.  Other countries actively support their chessplayers with government funding, the USA does not (as far as I'm aware).  There are many promising young players, and not enough money to go around to provide all of them with the trainers and coaching they need, let alone financial assistance to travel to and from tournaments where they can gain experience against international players and perhaps earn coveted norms. 

I also noted that WGM Deysi Cori of Peru played in the U-18 Open event and finished in 10th place overall - well done!  I'm sure she was shooting for better, though.

Judit Polgar Sighting

Previously reported, GM Judit Polgar, GM Gary Kasparov, and other legends of the game of chess rallied together to encourage the EU to adopt a chess in schools program. Here's a photo of the simul at least some (all?) of these august players participated in, from coverage at GM Alexandra Kosteniuk's chess blog.  Polgar standing next to Kasparov at the simul.  If I'd been her, I would have picked up a knight and shoved it up his nose!  Check out the new television show REVENGE.  That's what I'd do to him, but then, I'm a bitch, har :)

Vera Menchik, a Chess Goddess, Inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame

Isis and I were there, darlings, on September 8, 2011 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, to celebrate the pre-official "opening" of the new headquarters for the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame (relocating from Florida) and the World Chess Hall of Fame.  More than 400 other people also RSVP'd to the invitations, overwhelming staff and the available real estate!  But a good time was had by all. I actually listened to the presentations rather than socializing and heard Vera Menchik being inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame, along with Boris Gulko and Andy Soltis.  Good choices!

Deysi Cori Wins World U-16 Title

Sports 22 November, 2009 [ 00:03 ] Peru's Daisy Cori wins U-16 World Chess Championship LivinginPeru.com Isabel Guerra The young chess player Daysi Cori confirmed that she is the best in her category worldwide after winning the U-16 World Chess Championship, currently taking place in the town of Kemer, Turkey. Daysi beat Georgian Mariam Danelia and added 9.5 points in the table, taking a lead of 1.5 points to its closest competitor (Meri Arabidze) and took the title. "I'm very, very happy, very happy. In the last world championships I have not had the opportunity to reach the top. I only would see how the Europeans won and sang their national anthems. Now I'll be amongst them," she said in a telephone conversation with El Comercio. Daysi still has an scheduled game for tomorrow against Nazi Paikidze (Georgia) but even is she loses the game she will still be the champion. However she wants to stay undefeated: "Anyway I'll go to win my last game," he said.

Deysi Cori Wins World School Chess Championship

30 July, 2008 [ 10:45 ] Peru's Deysi Cori wins World School Chess Championship in Singapore Young Peruvian chess player, Deysi Cori, won today the World School Chess Championship in the Under-15 category in Singapore, after defeating Vietnamese Thi Mai Hung Nguyen. 15-year-old Deysi Cori achieved 7.5 points during the eighth round of the tournament, which was unattained by her nearest competitors. The young female chess champion is followed by Indonesian Dewii Aa Citra, with 5 points; and Mongolian Anu Bayar, also with 5 points when there is only one more round to play. As if that were not enough, her brother Jorge Cori is only half a point away from winning the world championship in the Under-13 category. Jorge played today with Indian Pranav Zantye and achieved 7 points, while Iranian second seed, Idania Pouya, has 6 points.Peruvian Jorge Cori will face Indonesian Masruri Rahman for the world championship tomorrow.
