10th Annual Grand Pacific Open
Goddesschess has provided funds for the Grand Pacific Open since 2011, and now here we are, with the 10th annual tournament coming up fast!
Here's the website for all the details, registration info, hotel info, etc.
This year's GPO will be held once again in beautiful Victoria, BC, Canada, over the Easter weekend, March 25 - 28, 2016. Six-round FIDE and CFC rated Swiss tournament. Guaranteed prize fund of $5,000. Goddesschess prizes for the chess femmes are in addition to any other prizes for which female players may qualify.
This year WGM Nino Maisuradze is returning to Victoria, hooray! She won the event in 2011 and came in second the next year (2012) when GM Hikaru Nakamura made an unexpected appearance and took the top spot.
WGM Maisuradze together with GM Alexandr Fier will be participating in a simul on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 6:30 p.m., cost is $10/person, on-site registration at 6:15 p.m. -- come one, come all! It's not often you get to test your mettle against such high calibre players.
Organizers have told me that registration has already broken their record and this event promises to be he largest ever, hooray!
We are always thrilled to see how many chess femmes come out to play in great local events like the Grand Pacific Open. This is why we direct our funding toward such events, three events annually in my hometown of Milwaukee that are organized by my adopted chess club (Southwest Chess Club located in Hales Corners, Wisconsin), the annual GPO in BC organized by Victoria Chess, and the annual Montreal Open Chess Championship in Quebec, this year organized by the Association des E'tudiant de l'ETS.
Ladies, let's make this the best turn-out year ever for chess femmes at all our Goddesschess sponsored events!

2013 Grand Pacific Open

Goddesschess is once again providing some sponsorship for this fine local event:

$5000 Guaranteed Prize Fund
The Grand Pacific Open is BC's largest chess tournament and this will be it's 7th annual! The main event is a 6 round FIDE and CFC rated Swiss with $5000 in prizes. There are also a number of side events which are free if you play in the main event and include an active tournament, Midnight Blitz with $100 in prizes, and a Bughouse tournament to finish off the weekend.

WGM Katerina Rohonyan (2296/2347 CFC), who has battled for the title of U.S. Women's Chess Champion in prior years, is among the registered players. I am also hoping that WGM Nino Maisuradze, who won the title in 2011 and came in second place (behind only surprise entrant GM Hikaru Nakamura) in 2012, will be able to return to try and reclaim her title.

2012 French Women's Chess Championship
Hola darlings!
Well, trying to decipher the French website is as bad as trying to decipher a Russian website written in Cyrillic! I can't do it, despite four years of high school French umpteen years ago (I will not define what umpteen is in terms of centuries).
This current table is from The Week in Chess:
I am shouting out to WGM Nino Maisuradze, who has played in one of our Goddesschess sponsored-events and won the women's title (and in 2011 the outright title) in the last couple of Grand Pacific Opens held near Vancouver, in British Columbia around Easter each year. This year she ran into the buzz saw that is GM Hikaru Nakamura who happened to be in the area and played in the GPO. Of course he won. It would have been incredibly shocking if he had not. Maisuradze came in second. She had an excellent tournament. We've already struck a deal with the organizers for 2013 sponsorship, and hope she'll be able to return to defend her title.

6th Grand Pacific Open
I received a report from Brian Raymer, one of the organizers of the Grand Pacific Open:
Another great GPO. Nino was 2nd place this year. 5/6 Her only loss to Nakamura who came 1st with 6/6. 120 players 10 women this year. A few others who could not make it last minute. Here is a video of Nino playing blitz with a couple of our young women. http://youtu.be/pptZ3hX08qs Nino had 1 minute her opponents 5 minutes. Nino is a great ambassador for chess. I hope she is able to make it again to the next GPO. Maybe the Canadian Open as well.

6th Grand Pacific Open!
Goddesschess provides sponsorship for this great event in British Columbia that takes place over Easter weekend, now in its 6th year. Preregistered players up to 90 - hope they break a record!
The latest news is that GM Hikaru Nakamura is registered and confirmed to play in the Grand Pacific Open. Say what? All I know is that HN is listed as a confirmed player and this has been confirmed by one of the organizers, Brian Raymer. Soooo.....WOW. Fricking WOW!
WGM Nino Maisuradze, 2011 Champion with a perfect 6-0, is returning to defend her title! Hooray! Oh my, she's going to have to face Nakamura OTB. Guess who I'll be rooting for - YOU GO GIRL!

A new undertaking for Goddesschess, we provided a modest prize fund this year for chess femmes playing in the Open. Congratulations to WGM Nino Maisuradze for winning the Open with a perfect score of 6.0/6 - the first player to ever do this.
Here is a report from the organizers:
Well, the dust has settled on the 5th annual Grand Pacific Open. A record attendence was set (again!) at 104 players in the main event. We drew players from Europe, across the US, and across Canada. Something like 20+% of the players were out of province (and 80% not from Victoria). The tournament attracted it's first GM and WGM (the eventual winner) as well as a selection of national (and world) and provincial junior champions.
Side events at the GPO (free for participants in the main event) were again popular and included a scholastic event, active tournament, blitz, and bughouse (or double chess).
As always, the event was held at the Hotel Grand Pacific,, a very nice hotel located in Victoria's Inner Harbour next to the BC legislature and across the street from US ferry connections. All equipment was provided and $4250 in guaranteed prizes. Stay tuned for announcements on next year's event - same place, same time (Easter) 2012, same venue.

The main event was convincingly won by WGM Nino Maisuradze with a 6-0 score with wins against most of the highest rated players. Coming in with 5.5 points for second place was Vancouver junior Loren Brigham Laceste who despite his A class rating,, took out a number of masters and experts.

The 2011 GPO has come to a close. WGM Nino Maisuradze won the event with a perfect 6-0 score. She becomes the first person to win the GPO with a perfect score.
