Pratyusha scalps Bhakti at Premier national chess

CHENNAI: Vizag girl Pratyusha Bodda swung into action for a third time in five rounds scalping a seeded player in the Premier national women's chess on Wednesday. Pratyusha, who had shocked Soumya Swaminathan and Swati Ghate in the previous rounds, accounted for Goa's Bhakti Kulkarni in the fifth round at the Nehru indoor stadium, moved into joint third position with 3.5 points after her upset victory.

Top seed International Master Tania Sachdev (Delhi) shot into lead with 4.5 points after defeating Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes (AAI). Tania's closest rival Padmini Rout of Orissa is on four points in second position. Padmini scored over higher seeded WGM Nisha Mohota. Sharing the third spot with Pratyusha were WGMs Sowmya Swaminathan (PSPB), S Meenakshi (AI), Mary Ann Gomes (AAI) and IM Nisha Mohota (PSPB).

Pratyusha Bodda, who trains with Rama Raju, coach of Dronavalli Harika, took only 24 moves in Caro-Kann defence to beat Bhakti Kulkarni. Bhakti went for a bishop for knight swap, that allowed Pratyusha to take control of the seventh rank with her rook. Then, the Andhra girl sacrificed an exchange and pushed for a massive kingside attack. Bhakti could only watch helplessly as Pratyusha rushed to victory with a queen and knight combination on the kingside. Pratyusha has so far played four WGMs and a WIM and she should be gunning for a Woman Grandmaster norm.

International Master Tania Sachdev had another successful round, scoring a methodical win over Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes. Though Tania consumed a lot of time in the Kings Indian Defence, she got a firm grip of the position. Tania forced Mary Ann into errors in the middle game. Conceding a pawn in a weakening position, Mary Ann failed to see the knight trap and resigned after 37 moves.

Padmini Rout scored a fluent win over International Master Nisha Mohota and Sowmya Swaminathan stopped TN girl Harini's good run.
