CHENNAI: The race for top honours hotted up in the Premier
national women's chess championship after the seventh round on Saturday. Padmini Rout of
Orissa, who enjoyed the lead before the rest day, had to share the lead with Tania Sachdev
of Delhi with 5.5 points each after she drew her game against Meenakshi
Subburaman of Air
India.
Top seed Tania won a volatile game against Andhra girl Pratyusha Bodda in Nimzo-Indian defence. The top seed seemed to be in a hurry after her loss to Rout in the previous round as she rolled her kingside pawns and found a decisive attack. Pratyusha lost two pawns in the process and that was enough for Tania to wrap up the game in 50 moves.
WGM Mary Ann Gomes (AAI) and International Master Nisha Mohota (PSPB) shared the second position with five points each.
The top board game between Meenakshi and Padmini was fought for five hours and 82 moves before it reached a draw. Both the players avoided the text but Meenakshi had a slight edge as she had two extra pawns in a rook and pawn ending, But Rout fought back gallantly to split the point.
Defending champion Sowmya Swaminathan lost in just 19 moves to International Master Nisha Mohota. Nisha sacrificed her queen to close the game. Nisha Mohota now meets Tania Sachdev in the next round.
